Most smart home problems are network problems.

When a smart home is unreliable, the automation is rarely at fault. It is the network underneath it: one router covering a house it was never going to cover, every device on the same flat network, and cameras streaming through a link that cannot carry them.

Questions people ask

Why does my smart home keep dropping off the network?

Usually coverage or contention rather than the devices themselves. One router rarely covers a whole house, and once dozens of low-power devices share the same congested band, things start timing out. The fix is a designed network: several access points, wired backhaul where possible, and traffic separated so cameras are not competing with everything else.

Do camera recordings go to the cloud?

They do not have to, and we default to keeping them local. Footage recorded on equipment in your house means no monthly fee per camera and no copy of your property sitting on someone else's servers. Remote viewing still works — it just reaches into your system rather than a third party's.

Why separate cameras and smart devices from the main network?

Because inexpensive connected devices are the least well-maintained things in a house, and a flat network means anything that reaches one of them can reach everything else. Segmenting them keeps a compromised camera or plug away from the computers and phones that matter.
